because her heart
Desirée, Trichoglossus haematodus, Green-Naped Rainbow Lorikeet,
a parrot smaller than a crow
because her heart is similar in shape to mine
is similar in construction to mine
because her heart beats 500 times a minute
pumps seven times more blood than mine
holding her in my hands her heartbeat

A Place of Promise
In April,
we are ancient river
rising high,
hosting islands
like poems
of gull-grey ice -
a melting life force
moved
by memories
of clear-blue waters,
swift silver-canoes;
for we are sustenance
to the wild muddy-cattails
that pen life
on time’s shifting shore,
a place of promise
for cranes, cormorants,
and small yellow perch…
but we are fragile poets
raising spring -
