Warkworth, Ontario

Human number

If I could fling
open windows painted
shut or charm your second-hand
jeans into forgetting
the shape of someone
else’s body, I would.
Leeward, the northshore, our street’s
melting, park oaks
curved through icicle glass, always
springtime.  We’re surrounded by
cloudacrylic, bare
picture hooks.  The apartment
floor’s camber:
breastbone, wishbone.  Aerial,
corridors are drenched with burnt
toast, furred thuds of mice
somersaulting from pipes
behind plaster walls.

The Fishgutters in the Morning
I have seen them
taking their ease
some of them leaning
on the cinderblock wall
some of them
sitting on ledges
or resting on gravel
their low voices smouldering
their quick hands
withering like candlewick
and all of them knifeless
in this
all of them here
and taken away from
the sharp skill of their work
and even the men
are skeined in hairnets, heads caught

Flower Pots

They
Stand
Tall and creamy
Silent, still and statuesque.
They
Are craggy towers
Rising above turquoise waves
And
Rippled rocky shelves.
They
Appear awesome to all but the black cormorants
Resting smugly atop
These homes of ancient watery secrets
And an aspiring evergreen or two
With roots that defy Newton’s laws.
They
Welcome all to the island
With no thought of transplantation
From their aquatic garden of Huron
They
